About CESC
Established in 1899, CESC holds the distinction of being India’s first fully integrated electrical utility company, providing power generation and distribution services in Kolkata and Howrah.
As a privately participating entity spanning generation, transmission, and distribution, CESC is the exclusive electricity provider within a 567 sq km area encompassing Kolkata, Howrah, and adjacent regions. It serves a substantial base of 3.4 million consumers across domestic, industrial, and commercial sectors.
CESC’s power generation capabilities include two thermal power plants within its licensed area, totaling 885 MW, namely the Budge Budge Generating Station (750 MW) and the Southern Generating Station (135 MW). Additionally, the company operates the 600 MW Haldia Thermal Plant in West Bengal, with its entire output dedicated to meeting CESC’s power demands through a dedicated 400KV network.
These internal sources, along with power procured from Haldia and Asansol, fulfill approximately 85-90% of customer electricity needs, with the remaining portion sourced externally. Notably, around 30% of the coal required for the Budge Budge plant is sourced from captive mines.
Beyond thermal power, CESC has ventured into renewable energy with Solar Power Plants in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, boasting a combined capacity of 27 MW. The company’s robust distribution network comprises 666 circuit km of EHV lines, 8762 circuit km of HV lines, and 13798 circuit km of LV lines, 1 interconnecting a vast infrastructure of substations to deliver power at various voltage levels.
